HHS Issues Final Code Sets, Delays Timeline

The Washington-based Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released the ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure code sets and the HIPAA 5010

The Washington-based Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released the ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure code sets and the HIPAA 5010 transaction sets and has extended the compliance deadline for use of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets to October 1, 2013.

The new date for ICD-10 provides healthcare organizations that are using the ICD-9 code set with an additional two years to prepare for compliance.

The second rule adopts an updated X12 standard, Version 5010, for certain electronic transactions; an updated version of the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs standard, Version D.0, for electronic pharmacy-related transactions; and a standard for Medicaid pharmacy subrogation transactions.

Both final rules, the agency says, are designed to facilitate the ongoing transition to an electronic healthcare environment through adoption of a new generation of diagnosis and procedure codes and updated standards for electronic transactions. The ICD-10 and HIPAA rules are published at the Federal Register. To view them, go to www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/browse.html, and click “Go” next to where 2009 appears in the selection box. A fact sheet describing both rules may be viewed at www.cms.hhs.gov/apps/media/fact_sheets.asp.
