The Chicago-based HIMSS’ Financial Systems Steering Committee has published a White Paper on the National Health Information Network.

The paper asserts that the existing HIPAA transaction exchange highway is suitable to securely transmit clinical and other healthcare data, and calls to initiate the development of a road map to demonstrate how this information highway can provide the basis for the movement of clinical and administrative data. It says that using an existing comprehensive health information exchange will supersede the need to create another separate healthcare information network.
