The Washington, D.C.-based National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) recently released the results of a survey to the attendees of its NeHC University recent program on health information exchanges (HIEs), called, "Introduction to the HIE Landscape." NeHC says the results of the survey will determine the development of future NeHC University programs and provide valuable insight into key issues and challenges facing the world of HIE.

Among the findings NeHC is reporting is a diverse among of respondents including various healthcare stakeholders, with the largest being representatives of government, hospitals and health systems, non-profits, consultants, and technology companies. The non-profit also found respondents reported that provider adoption, conflicting demands for resources, variability in deployment of standards, workflow and change management, talent and human resource shortfalls, and uncertainty about healthcare reform are the most difficult HIT/HIE issues their organizations are facing.

In terms of what people want to learn about, respondents are interested in the implementation of interoperability standards, privacy and security, and HIE implications of accountable care.

“The results of this survey provide valuable insight into the most pressing HIT/HIE challenges healthcare organizations are facing and topics our participants want to learn more about. These findings will help guide NeHC’s programs to help our stakeholders overcome these challenges,” NeHC CEO Kate Berry said in a statement.
