According to a report from Washington Business Journal, the Washington D.C. Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) has been shut down due to sustainability issues. The report cites the D.C. Primary Care Organization (DCPCA), the RHIO’s founder and chief advocate, as the source of this news.

The D.C. RHIO, which was a partnership between DCPCA, the DC government, and Microsoft, was originally funded for three years, and $6 million in 2010. The goal of the organization was to create a virtual connection between providers that allows for patient clinical information to be easily shared. According to the report from Washington Business Journal, DCPCA’s recently resigned CEO Sharon Baskerville, said the organization had to shut down the RHIO because some funds through a grant didn’t come through.

"It doesn't mean we weren't looking for other funding, but we failed to get this funded by the city. And now, without funding from [the federal grant] we had nowhere else to go,” Baskerville said to Washington Business Journal

A request for comment from DCPCA has yet to be answered.
