Rush Health, a Chicago-based clinical network of physicians and hospitals, is creating a private health information exchange (HIE) for its members, investing in advanced population health software in an effort to improve care quality, care coordination, and patient outcomes, the organization announced this week.

For the HIE, healthcare provider is using software from the Microsoft-GE, Bellvue, Wash.-based combination, Caradigm. Caradigm will allow the Rush Health physicians and hospitals to access real-time clinical data, from multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems and an enterprise data warehouse (EDW). Rush plans on sharing data with payers, national registries, and the MetroChicago Health Information Exchange.

“This is not about simply moving health information data from point A to point B,” Brent J. Estes, president and CEO of Rush Health, said in a statement. “We will be able to identify populations of patients with chronic diseases like hypertension or diabetes, and know right away when patients are seen in an emergency room or admitted to a hospital. Using this information, we can better analyze trends and patterns to organize approaches to care and follow up that can reduce episodes of care, improve health and save patients and payers money.”
