The Parkland Health and Hospital System, a large public health system based in Dallas, and its affiliated foundation and Center for Clinical Innovation, have accepted a $12 million grant to build a health information exchange (HIE) portal, the provider announced this week.

The exchange portal will aim to connect various clinical systems inside and outside the enterprise. The goal is to have data be moved between hospitals, clinics, homeless shelters, food aid organizations and other social assistance agencies, Parkland said in a press release. There will also be artificial intelligence features that was use advanced algorithms and analytics, which will interpret medical information and social risk factors for predictive purposes.

The grant comes from the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Foundation at Communities Foundation of Texas, a nonprofit which supports projects in education, scientific research, medical advancement and public safety. The grant came about after an 18-month feasibility study funded by the Caruth Foundation at the Communities Foundation of Texas. Parkland’s innovation center developed a five-year blueprint to build the portal in Dallas.

“Our belief is that the Dallas (HIE) represents a radical technological vision for cross-sector, Metroplex-wide patient care,” Ruben Amarasingham, M.D. president and CEO of Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation, said in a statement. “We are incredibly humbled to receive this grant – and to reinvent the way healthcare can be delivered."
