In this Healthcare Informatics podcast, Associate Editor Gabriel Perna speaks with Tom Martin, manager at mHIMSS, a non-profit sect of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, aimed at driving the use of mobile devices in healthcare. Martin discusses why most healthcare organizations are still struggling to figure out how to best use mHealth. “It’s overcoming the existing barriers that inhibit the widespread adoption,” he says.

Martin talks about some of those main obstacles to mHealth implementation in a provider setting, as outlined by the “mHIMSS Roadmap.” Those obstacles include: figuring out the return on investment (ROI), policy issues, standards and interoperability, and technological barriers. Other topics discussed by Martin include the opportunities for mHealth in patient engagement and why CIOs are afraid of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement.

"There is a greater focus from the CIO perspective on how to properly bring these devices into an IT environment because it seems inevitable that BYOD will become the de facto approach to mobile device implementation," Martin says in the podcast. "One of the solutions to the BYOD dilemma is education and proper evaluation of the products that are out there in the market.”
