New York HIE Rolls Out Statewide Clinical Alert System

The Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY) is now equipped with a patient alert system, the New York State Health Department announced this week.

The health department announced the real-time alert system with Healthix, the largest of the nine entities that comprise SHIN-NY, the Brooklyn Health Home, and New York-based health insurance company Oscar.

The alert system, created by Healthix, aims to allow care managers to receive real-time alerts when their patients are admitted to or discharged from a hospital. It will be rolled out statewide. Brooklyn Health Home, which placed second in last year’s Healthcare Informatics Innovators Award program for its efforts in care coordination for the mentally ill, has used the alert system. It has allowed care managers within the program to quickly respond to their patients’ urgent care needs, including visits to emergency rooms and hospital admission and bring critical information about those patients to the hospital staff in real-time.

“We at Healthix are gratified to be able to deliver tools designed to support providers, assist care managers and help coordinate the care of patients, many of whom struggle with multiple co-morbidities and other complex conditions,” stated Tom Check, CEO of Healthix.  “With a growing number of participating clinical, behavioral health and social service providers, as well as health plans, Healthix provides secure access to current patient information wherever and whenever it’s needed.”

Oscar is another organization that has used these alerts. For the health insurance company, most of their members who generated a Healthix notification on a variety of urgent healthcare issues have been engaged. The alerts have allowed Oscar’s team to provide appropriate care management services for those members.

The alert system has also been used by NYU Langone Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, North Shore-LIJ Health System, Lutheran Medical Center, Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Federation Employment and Guidance Service, Inc. (FEGS), ProHEALTH Care Associates LLP, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and others.
