The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has hired Michael James McCoy, M.D. as its first ever chief health information officer (CHIO).
Dr. McCoy will start next Monday, according to email sent from Karen DeSalvo, M.D., National Coordinator for Health IT, to staff members. He will be in charge of driving ONC's clinical policy for standards and regulatory matters as well as act as the clinical expert on interoperability.
McCoy, a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist who practiced clinically for more than 20 years, has extensive experience in health information technology, specifically as the HIT specialist for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He has worked with standards development through the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Patient Care Coordination domain, and the IHE International Board of Directors.
"He is passionate, as am I, on making effective use of interoperable healthcare IT while ensuring a person-centered health system that results in the best outcomes possible," DeSalvo wrote in the email.
