The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has announced the six winners of its inaugural ONC Market R&D Pilot Challenge, which aims to bring together healthcare organizations and innovative companies through pilot funding awards and facilitated matchmaking.

The six winning teams, awarded $50,000 each to fund their pilot programs, will go on to live-test new health information technology applications in healthcare settings administered by their challenge partners beginning in August. Applications were received from 78 host-innovator teams from across the nation. The winning teams are:

  • ClinicalBox and Lowell General Hospital
  • CreateIT Healthcare Solutions and MHP Salud
  • Gecko Health Innovations and Boston Children’s Hospital
  • Optima Integrated Health and University of California, San Francisco, Cardiology Division
  • physIQ and Henry Ford Health System
  • Vital Care Telehealth Services and Dominican Sisters Family Health Service

“The ONC Market R&D Pilot Challenge breaks down the barriers between promising start ups and healthcare stakeholders by helping early-stage health IT companies connect with healthcare organizations that would host pilot programs,” said Adam Wong, ONC management and programs analyst, in a May 11 blog post. “The innovative technologies developed by these companies are integral to improving consumer engagement and care coordination, which ultimately lead to greater demand for interoperability and health data liquidity,” Wong said.
