After only a year at Cleveland-based University Hospitals, Joy Grosser is leaving Ohio to become chief information officer of UW Medicine in Seattle.

UW Medicine, which spans four hospitals and numerous clinics, said Grosser would join the health system on Nov. 1, 2017. She is replacing James Fine, M.D., as CIO. He has been CIO with the academic health system since July 2005.

“My goal is to build upon and optimize our tools to support patient care and our care teams,” Grosser said in a prepared statement. “Technology provides us a powerful means to care for the individual patient as well as patient populations. UW Medicine’s mission to improve the health of the public aligns perfectly with my philosophy, and I am looking forward to working with the numerous teams to achieve that aspiration,” she said.

At University Hospitals Grosser oversaw IT for a network of 18 hospitals, more than 40 outpatient health centers and 200 physician offices in northern Ohio. The system includes University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, which is affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

She previously developed and implemented IT strategic plans for UnityPoint Health in West Des Moines, Iowa, and for the University of California Irvine Health System in Orange, Calif.
