In a Thursday session at the HCI Executive Summit, Paul Katz, founder and CEO of Intelligent Systems, said now is the time for healthcare providers to take advantage of the explosion of data. The Accountable Care Act, meaningful use, accountable care organization (ACOs), and patient centered medical homes are all creating more data sources and the need to turn the information into actionable information.

The triple aim goal of better care, better patient satisfaction, and efficiency, hospitals and doctors need to care for the patients outside the four walls; they must follow the patient at least 30 days after they are discharged, to avoid readmissions.

The big area for cost savings is sickest patients, and those conditions need to be coded correctly, he said.

Michael Bodenstab, Intelligent Health CFO and vice president of business development, payers and providers are working together as never before. He said it is all-important for patients to be engaged in their own healthcare—that’s the Holy Grail on both the payer sideand the provider side, he said.

Bodenstab said that ACOs were “a toll gate for changing the workflow” of patient care. When a patient comes into the office, the physician has to know what the care gaps are. Holisitic data will enable better risk stratification to see where care leakage is across the board.

According to a recent Deloitte study, everyone has their way that they want to engage. He thinks that engagement will increase as our lives increasingly revolve around smartphones.
