Marc Harrison, M.D., is leaving his position as CEO of Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare, a position he has held since 2016, to run a healthcare platform business for venture capital firm General Catalyst.

In May 2022, Intermountain and General Catalyst announced a collaboration to drive innovation across the Utah-based health system with the goals of expanding value-based care, reducing total costs of care, providing world-class patient experiences, and achieving health equity objectives. Intermountain said it would leverage Health Assurance Network, which is a group of tech innovation companies within General Catalyst’s investment portfolio. These companies include Transcarent, Olive, Sprinter Health, Commure, and Cadence, among others.

General Catalyst recently announced the close of its $670 million Health Assurance Fund II. Since March 2020, through its Fund X and Fund XI groups of funds, GC has invested over $1.7 billion in companies aligned with its vision of Health Assurance, the firm said.

During Harrison’s tenure, Intermountain helped launch other collaborative efforts, including Civica Rx and Graphite Health.

“We’ve historically been on the cutting edge of health innovation, especially when it comes to providing high-quality care that keeps people healthier at more affordable costs,” said Harrison when the partnership with General Catalyst was announced. “This collaboration between Intermountain and General Catalyst can help turbocharge the movement towards population health and value-based care by connecting us with a network of innovators outside the traditional healthcare space.”

Harrison also oversaw the merger of s Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare and Colorado-based SCL Health, which closed earlier this year. Intermountain is now the eleventh-largest nonprofit health system in the United States. The organization employs more than 59,000 caregivers, operates 33 hospitals (including one virtual hospital), and runs 385 clinics across seven states while providing health insurance to one million people in Utah and Idaho.

The Intermountain Healthcare Board plans to name an interim president and CEO and will conduct a national search for a replacement this fall.

“Marc has helped spur innovation across our organization during his six-year tenure. We are better today because of his outstanding leadership,” said chair of the Intermountain Healthcare Board, former Governor of Utah Mike Leavitt, in a statement. “At Intermountain, we remain steadfast in our dedication to our patients and the communities we serve. Our leaders and caregivers will continue to carry our important work forward and ensure that the health and well-being of our patients remain at the center of our work.”
