CMS Announces Participating States in The Innovation in Behavioral Health Model

Dec. 18, 2024
The IBH Model aims to improve behavioral and physical health outcomes for Medicare/Medicaid populations

On December 18, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that state Medicaid agencies in Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, and South Carolina were selected to participate in the Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model. CMS announced the IBH Model in January of 2024, intending to improve behavioral and physical health outcomes and overall quality of care for Medicare/Medicaid populations.

According to CMS, specialty behavioral health practices under the IBH Model will screen and assess patients for priority health conditions, mental health conditions, SUD, or both. The IBH Model is a state-based model led by state Medicaid agencies that aligns payment between Medicaid and Medicare for integrated services.

Oklahoma will implement the IBH model statewide, and Michigan, New York, and South Carolina will implement the model in designated sub-state geographic service areas.

Model implementation will start on January 1, 2025.
