AMA Selects Recognized Health IT Expert as President-Elect

The American Medical Association as named has named Steven J. Stack, M.D., an emergency physician with a health IT background, as president-elect.

The American Medical Association as named has named Steven J. Stack, M.D., an emergency physician with a health IT background, as president-elect.

Stack, who currently practices in Lexington and surrounding central Kentucky, will be 43 years old and the youngest AMA president in the past 100 years when he assumes the office in June 2015. Stack was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 2006 and since then has been board chair and secretary.

Stack is nationally recognized for expertise in health IT, according to a news release; he has been chair of the AMA’s Health Information Technology Advisory Group from 2007 to 2013. Stack has also served on multiple federal advisory groups for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), including the Information Exchange, PCAST Report, and Strategic Plan workgroups. A member of its board of directors since 2011, Stack is currently the secretary of eHealth Initiative, a non-profit association committed to improving health care through the advancement of health IT.

Robert M. Wah, M.D., a reproductive endocrinologist and ob-gyn who was elected president-elect of the AMA in June 2013, also is a nationally-recognized expert in health IT. Wah serves as chief medical officer at IT services firm Computer Sciences Corp, and was the first deputy national coordinator at ONC.
