The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Board of Directors has named David Muntz, the former Principal Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT, its first adviser to the board.

Muntz had served as Principal Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) from 2012 through 2013. On Oct. 5, 2013, he left the agency. Muntz has since joined GetWell Network, a Bethesda, Md.-based vendor firm, as senior vice president and CIO. GetWell Network was named an up-and-coming vendor this year by Healthcare Informatics, meaning the fast-growing company could soon make the HCI 100 list.

Muntz began this volunteer, non-voting position at the July 10 board meeting. While at ONC, Muntz established the Office of Consumer e-Health and the Office of Chief Medical Officer. He was a major supporter of activities related to rural America and behavioral health. Muntz has extensive experience writing and implementing electronic health records (EHR).

“It is an honor for me to join the AHIMA board as an adviser,” Muntz said in a statement. “I have great respect for the vital role AHIMA and its members play in driving information governance and defining standards for electronic health information; their expertise in analytics, informatics and decision support; and how they empower patients to manage personal health information to optimize health.”

Muntz will serve a one-year non-voting term with the option for board reappointment two additional times. The board has the option of adding an additional advisor by majority vote, according to an AHIMA news release.
