California HIE Pilot to Use Blue Button App

The State of California Office of Health Information Integrity (OHII) will use a mobile patient engagement app as part of an upcoming health information exchange (HIE) pilot.

The iBlueButton app, from San Diego-based Humetrix, allows patients to view, download and transmit their personal health records using their mobile device. This pilot was done in accordance with National Association for Trusted Exchange (NATE), a nonprofit organization that helps states collaborate on advancing health information exchange.

For this pilot, patients can receive directly on their smartphone their health record coming from any doctor participating in the San Diego Regional Health Information Exchange. This includes University of California at San Diego (USCD) Health System and San Diego Kaiser Medical Center, among others. The San Diego Regional HIE recently transitioned from being a member of the Beacon Community, an Office of National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) funded project that ended in September.

CalOHII runs a number of HIE demonstration projects “to evaluate potential solutions to and facilitate the exchange of electronic health information that promotes quality of care, respects the privacy and security of health information, and enhances the trust of the stakeholders.”

“We are grateful to have Humetrix collaborating with all the stakeholders involved in the pilot.  Exploring how a common trust framework can be leveraged to make it easier for patients using Direct-enabled PHRs, like iBlueButton, to get engaged in their care will better enable NATE and the nation to move forward on meaningful exchange between patients and their providers,” Aaron Seib, program director of the NATE Pilot and NATE CEO, said in a statement.
