Tech is Key to Fighting Addiction, Survey Concludes

Jan. 23, 2025
A new survey by Kipu Health finds that technology is critical in reducing relapses

Florida-based Kipu Health, a provider of cloud-based electronic medical record (EMR) services, recently published the findings of their survey, The State of Behavioral Healthcare: 2025 Outlook. The study revealed that 84 percent of behavioral health leaders believe technology can play a transformative role in addressing the addiction crisis and reducing relapse rates.

Sixty-eight percent of clinicians reported that technology positively influences their ability to connect with patients. Additionally, the study showed that the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is on the rise.

Some other trends discovered through the survey include:

  • Staffing shortages, administrative burdens, and the need for technology upgrades are central concerns
  • Burnout remains a major issue for staff
  • Leadership is focused on workforce development and technology investments
  • Clinical staff need streamlined administrative processes and effective outcomes-tracking
  • Non-clinical staff are facing challenges related to billing complexities and compliance requirements

Despite challenges, “there is optimism across the sector,” the survey stated, “with a focus on growth opportunities through integrated care models, telehealth, and enhanced community services.”

[B]ehavioral health facilities must invest in technology, workforce development, and care access initiatives to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. By addressing these key areas, the field can ensure a more sustainable and responsive behavioral health system for the future,” Carina Edwards, CEO at Kipu Health, said in a statement.

Kipu Health shared that the survey respondents included behavioral health leaders, vice presidents, directors, clinical staff like therapists and doctors, and non-clinical staff such as billing specialists and administrative coordinators.
