Drug diversion is a concept involving the transfer of any legally prescribed controlled substance from the individual for whom it was prescribed to another person for any illicit use. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drug diversion can result in several types of patient harm, including substandard care delivered by an impaired healthcare provider, denial of essential pain medication or therapy, and risk of infection.
