NYU Langone Receives Stage 7 EMRAM Adoption Award

HIMSS Analytics this week announced that it awarded New York City-based NYU Langone Medical Center’s Tisch Hospital, Rusk Rehabilitation and Hospital for Joint Diseases with its Stage 7 award.

HIMSS Analytics this week announced that it as New York City-based NYU Langone Medical Center’s Tisch Hospital, Rusk Rehabilitation and Hospital for Joint Diseases with its Stage 7 award. HIMSS Analytics also recognized NYU Langone’s ambulatory practices with its Stage 7 Ambulatory Award.

According to HIMSS, NYU Langone represents the first hospital enterprise in New York State to receive the awards.

The award program is based on the seven-stage Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model, which measures the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment.

Developed in 2011, the Ambulatory EMR Adoption Model provides a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for ambulatory facilities owned by hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), ambulatory facilities can review the implementation and use of IT applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.

Located in the heart of Manhattan, NYU Langone is composed of five hospitals—Tisch Hospital, its flagship acute care facility; Rusk Rehabilitation; the Hospital for Joint Diseases, the Medical Center’s dedicated inpatient orthopaedic hospital; NYU Lutheran Medical Center, a full-service, 450-bed teaching hospital located in Brooklyn, and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, a comprehensive pediatric hospital supporting a full array of children’s health services across the Medical Center.

Also part of NYU Langone is NYU School of Medicine and the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute–designated cancer center.

“The Stage 7 awards signify the highest and most optimized level of EHR adoption in NYU Langone's hospital setting and across the ambulatory network, which includes leveraging and governing health data and analytics, computer order entry and electronic documentation, paperless registration, and patient engagement,” Nader Mherabi, senior vice president and vice dean, chief information officer at NYU Langone Medical Center, said in a statement. “The technology both demands and enables precise information sharing between healthcare providers and patients, and is critical to achieving NYU Langone’s commitment to providing world-class medicine.”

During the fourth quarter of 2015, only 4.2 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Logic received the Stage 7 Award, and only 7.89 percent of the more than 36,000 ambulatory clinics received the Stage 7 Ambulatory Award.

“NYU Langone is the first organization in the State of New York to achieve Stage 7 of the acute care and ambulatory EMRAM. Their successful bundled payment program along with their commercial and public payor registries demonstrates they are ready to thrive in a value-based care payment environment,” John Daniels, global vice president, healthcare advisory services group, HIMSS Analytics, said.

The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers and chief medical information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.
