Tampa, Fla.-based Moffitt Cancer Center is deploying its own private enterprise network to link medical imaging, electronic health records (EHRs) and molecular medicine to facilitate collaboration between physicians, researchers and clinicians.

Moffitt Cancer Center served nearly 350,000 outpatient visits in 2015 and employs more than 5,000 people, according to a press release from health IT vendor partner Ciena. The organization is deploying the private network using packet optical technology from Ciena in order to support data-intensive applications such as advanced medical imaging, electronic health records and molecular medicine. The network will also improve efficiency and help eliminate costs associated with multiple, disparate networks, according to the announcement.

This network connects five remote locations and covers approximately 50 miles in distance.

By deploying this platform, Moffitt aims to provide its medical staff assured access to patients’ updated EHRs and the ability to collaborate on the various cancer research work being conducted.

John McFarland, director of technology services at Moffitt Cancer Center said in a statement that building a private network would help to support the organization’s mission of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer. “It also gives us a powerful communication infrastructure platform to improve patient care through closer collaboration and data sharing between researchers and physicians,” McFarland said.
