Hospital to patients: We’ve been hacked, check your accounts

Oct. 29, 2018

Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC, is urging patients to check their health insurance statements following the discovery of a hack involving patient information.

The hospital investigated the incident in late August and found out that three hospital employee email accounts were breached between July 4 and Aug. 17, according to a release from the hospital.

The emails may have included patient information, including names, birth dates, health information, health insurance information and Social Security numbers, according to the release.

The hospital has “no indication that the information in the emails has been misused in any way,” according to the release.

The hospital started sending out letters to patients who may be affected. The hospital is also providing free credit monitoring and identity protection for patients whose Social Security numbers were possibly compromised.
