HP's Top 10 Trends in BI (and HIT) for 2009: #1 Consumerization of IT

Sometimes vendors do get it (mostly) right. Hewlett-Packard put together a brief white paper in February of this year laying out their view of Business Intelligence (BI) for 2009 (and beyond).

Sometimes vendors do get it (mostly) right. Hewlett-Packard put together a brief white paper in February of this year laying out their view of Business Intelligence (BI) for 2009 (and beyond). I think that they got it largely right. Their #1 trend is the consumerization of IT. Below is a summary of the trend, my thoughts on whether HP got this particular trend right and what the trend may mean for HIT.

HP predicts: GenXers will lead the way, demanding BI interfaces that look and behave like their consumer technology products i.e. their PlayStations, DVRs and Facebook pages. In other words, more visualization, more collaboration and more data.

The Verdict: Yes and then some, although GenXers will be the enablers (authorizing these products and projects), GenYers (the true “digital natives”) will actually be the leaders and value producers here.

HIT Impact: The collaborative and multi-source data capabilities of BI platforms will increasingly come into conflict with HIPAA security, confidentiality and privacy requirements. Rigor in data quality, report development and report publication will be essential to prevent flawed analyses from sprouting hydra-like within your organization.
