Allscripts, the Chicago-based EHR vendor, has announced a partnership with Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. that will link their developer communities to create an open platform ecosystem for the healthcare system. The goal is to encourage an open system in healthcare IT, expanding Allscripts’ Application Developer Program (ADP), which allows third-parties to integrate software within the Allscripts platform.

Allscripts and Microsoft say this collaboration can better support developers who want to create applications for both of their platforms. Both say they will increase support for a number of partner solutions and Microsoft applications such as Dynamics CRM. Overall, the companies also will work together to expand the Allscripts developer community to create more apps to improve healthcare.

“We believe the transformation happening in healthcare requires an open approach to enable innovative advances in how our clients deliver care. Open is not just about being easy to connect with but just as importantly about innovation,” Glen Tullman, CEO of Allscripts, said in a statement. “Creating this open ecosystem is another step toward our vision of a true Connected Community of Healthcare.”
