Utah-based health system, Intermountain Healthcare has announced a new joint venture with Deloitte. The two companies are launching an analytics driven tool, OutcomesMiner, which will use data from electronic medical record (EMR) systems to give various researchers, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies the insight needed to create new products and therapies.

Along with using Intermountain’s repository of EMR data, OutcomesMiner will allow users to conduct follow-on studies to develop further evidence to support comparative effectiveness research programs, new product planning activities, and health economic and outcomes research and observational insights. Users of the platform will  be able to form “research communities” that develop additional insights related to comparative effectiveness and evidence-based medicine, Intermountain says.

“OutcomesMiner can do more than provide insights in a one-off manner,” said Marc Probst, CIO of Intermountain, in a statement. “It can also be the catalyst that brings key players together in further exploring new approaches to health care based on data.”

In addition to helping various companies, Intermountain claims the tool will be helpful in allowing hospitals and clinics to determine better treatments based on clinical data and patient characteristics.

The platform was launched at the Drug Information Association’s 2013 Annual Meeting in Boston.
