NYC Health and Hospital Corp. Invests in Analytics Platform
The New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC) is building an advanced analytics platform to improve patient care and operational efficiency, using IBM as its vendor of choice, the Armonk, N.Y.-based tech giant announced this week.
New York City Health and Hospital Corporation, a government agency that operates the public hospitals and clinics in the city, has awarded IBM with a one-year, $10 million contract to build the platform. The agency currently uses systems to report quality metrics that are manual and dispersed across the organization. This leads to inefficiencies and makes it difficult for the organization to use the data for patient insights.
The new system will aim to integrate enterprise data from across HHC, which will allow for enhanced analytics and timely reporting and improved outcomes. Specifically, it will integrate eight HHC repositories into one common healthcare data model and will aim to standardize disparate information across patients, providers, locations and reimbursement codes.
“At HHC, we have so much information and data that can be used to achieve our vision for quality, access and efficiency,” Bert Robles, senior vice president and CIO at HHC, said in a statement. “What’s been missing is the right tool that can draw insights from scale and diversity of our data…With this tool in place, we can see the future of care at HHC, care that is more predictive and proactive to manage care for patients with the greatest risk factors and most complex medical needs.”
NYC HHC is just the latest organization to make a big analytics investment. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is also investing in analytics software from IBM, testing the effectiveness of a real-time alarm that tries and predicts rising brain pressure in patients with traumatic brain injuries. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) health system made a big announcement last year on the development of a five-year, $100 million enterprise analytics initiative to foster personalized medicine and other core strategic healthcare IT goals for the organization.
