Judy Murphy, R.N. the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT’s (ONC) chief nursing officer (CNO) and director of its Office of Clinical Quality and Safety (OCQS) will be leaving her post in two weeks.
Murphy is the fourth higher up to depart the ONC since June.
Recently, Doug Fridsma, M.D., Ph.D., chief science officer at the ONC announced he was leaving to be President and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). This past summer, Lygeia Ricciardi, and Joy Pritts also departed the ONC. In May, Karen DeSalvo, M.D., National Coordinator for Health IT announced a realigned leadership structure at the ONC.
Murphy came to the ONC in December of 2011. She served as Deputy National Coordinator for Programs and Policy, helping lead Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) programs such as the regional extension center (REC) outreach, the Health IT Fellows, and Meaningful Use Vanguards. She also helped create the ONC Office of Consumer eHealth and was responsible for the Blue Button download your data initiative, said DeSalvo in an email to ONC staffers.
“Most recently, as CNO, she championed a Nursing Engagement Strategy for ONC and initiated the joint ONC and American Nurses Association Health IT for Nurses Summit which was attended by 200 RNs and NPs. In addition, her astute organizational and project management skills were put to use strengthening portfolio management and project performance management at ONC,” DeSalvo wrote in the email.
She is leaving ONC to serve as CNO with IBM Healthcare Global Business Services. Jon White, M.D., director on the health information technology (Health IT) portfolio at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), will be taking her place in the interim as head of the OCQS and to be acting CMO at ONC, reporting to Deputy National Coordinator Jacob Reider, M.D.
Helping out Dr. White will be Andy Gettinger, M.D., of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, who will lead the OCQS safety team.
