M*Modal, the Franklin, Tenn.-based provider of clinical documentation and medical transcription software, has named Scott MacKenzie its new chief executive officer.

MacKenzie replaces former CEO Duncan James, who resigned from the top position in August of this year after a tumultuous financial year which saw the company file and emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

MacKenzie is a health IT veteran, having served as CEO of Passport Health Communications, which was purchased by Experian in 2013. MacKenzie started at Passport in 2009. Before that, he was the president of RelayHealth Pharmacy at McKesson. He also has worked at Cerner, AT&T, and GE Capital.

“M*Modal has a unique combination of talent, assets and relationships that creates tremendous potential in how it can impact healthcare and serve customers,” MacKenzie said in a statement. “I am joining M*Modal at a time when the company is positioned for change and the market is open to solutions that improve productivity and leverage technology investments. I look forward to working with M*Modal’s talented team to deliver on its vision to be the industry’s best clinical documentation provider.”
