IMS Health, a Danbury, Ct.-based healthcare analytics and consulting company, has acquired Semantelli, a Bridgewater, N.J.-based social media analytics startup, for an undisclosed price, it recently announced. The goal behind the acquisition, IMS Health says, is to provide healthcare organizations analytics that allows them to monitor and analyze social media content in real-time.

Semantelli’s technology, IMS claims, allows healthcare organizations to “access, navigate and analyze both structured and unstructured data from thousands of online resources,” including social media platforms. Its platform can support more than 50 languages, uses various algorithms, and has various technologies (including natural language processing) that can detect trends in disease areas and treatments, IMS adds.

“Social media has become an integral part of the healthcare experience, and navigating this channel effectively to unlock the right information for making decisions is critical. The combination of Semantelli’s technology and IMS’s healthcare data and privacy management expertise will fuel ongoing innovation in a responsible manner, enabling our clients to identify vital trends and take actions on real-world insights in real time,” stated Stefan Linn, senior vice president at IMS Health.
