The LifeBot emergency communications system, featuring the LifeBot Slate PC tablet by Hewlett Packard, was demonstrated on the floor at HIMSS11.

One of the coolest things demonstrated at the HIMSS11 show (Feb. 20-24, Orlando) was the emergency telemedicine technology called LifeBot that lets EMTs send real-time video, voice and streamed medical data from the ambulance to doctors back at the hospital. The system uses Hewlett Packard computing systems.

The LifeBot Slate PC tablet (similar to, but smaller and more powerful than an Apple iPad) can remotely connect to other LifeBot DREAMS (disaster relief and emergency medical services) systems, including telemedicine carts and ambulances. The LifeBot Emergency Department Workstation uses the HP Touchsmart 9100 Series PC to perform telemedicine, radio and telephone communications, and advanced teletriage.

The LifeBot Slate enables any paramedic, neurologist, trauma surgeon or emergency medical specialist to obtain immediate telepresence or remote video, voice and data connections using the simple 1.5-pound portable PC tablet. For those deploying interoperative emergency communications, the LifeBot Slate and the Touchsmart platforms can also be used with the LifeBot Communications Controller. This enables the Slate to be carried as a portable wireless device to perform both radio and telephone communications, including UHF, VHF, 800 MHz, 700 MHz, P25 and broadband voice, video and data.

According to LifeBot, the DREAMS system has already been successfully deployed and tested in Texas aboard “Super Ambulances” that use multiple remote-controlled cameras to provide hospital-based emergency specialists live intelligence. LifeBot is pursuing world-wide exclusive licensing rights to the DREAMS system, which was developed collaboratively by researchers at Texas A&M University, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through its Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC).

LifeBot plans to expand its technologies into battlefield operations, disaster relief and specialized emergency pre-hospital applications. A push to integrate advanced EHR (electronic health record), EMR (electronic medical record) and ePCR (electronic patient care record) functionalities is also underway. Besides Hewlett Packard, LifeBot growth technology partners include Bosch and Avia.
