CHIME CHCIO Program Celebrates Milestone

May 28, 2011

ANN ARBOR, MI, May 25, 2011 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) Program has reached a milestone, surpassing the 100 mark in number of credentialed individuals since the program launched in July 2009.

Following its last examination in April, a total of 109 CHIME members and CHIME Affiliate program participants have now earned the CHCIO and CHCIO-Eligible designation.

“CHIME is proud to recognize the over 100 certified professionals who have identified themselves as leaders in the healthcare IT industry,” said CHIME Board member and Certification Committee Chair Gary Barnes, CIO at Medical Center Health System in Texas. “Their commitment during these extremely busy times shows their dedication for advocating for more effective use of information management and turning ‘Meaningful Use’ to ‘Meaningful Care’

CHCIO status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development for healthcare CIOs and is the only credentialing program that distinguishes healthcare IT executives from others in the industry.

“I am both pleased and proud to have achieved the CHCIO distinction knowing the character and skills of those that have been certified before me,” said Rod Dykehouse, Vice President of Information Services and CIO at ProHealth Care in Wisconsin, one of 16 who passed the exam in April. It is their industry prominence, combined with the difficulty of the exam and certification requirements, that has built the respect for the CHCIO achievement.”

CHIME members who have been in a CIO or equivalent position for at least three years, pass the 125-question CHCIO examination, and collect 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are eligible to become certified. CHCIOs must be committed to ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years.

Additionally, CHIME is dedicated to the development of future industry leaders and as such awards the designation: CHCIO-Eligible. This status is awarded to those candidates who meet all of the program requirements but lack the requisite number of years of experience as a CIO.

“In a short time, the program is already playing a role in exposing some of the best CIOs in the country,” said Suzy Marzano, CHIME’s Director of Education. “It is extremely encouraging to see the number of certified individuals grow as the CHCIO status becomes the barometer of one’s commitment to the healthcare CIO profession.”

To ensure the both the CHCIO Program and exam are relevant and reflective of current developments in the healthcare IT industry, CHIME is committed to updating and enhancing content on a continual basis with the help of over 50 member volunteers. In October, the CHCIO Program will release a second version of the exam.

“Reflective changes in the testing processes ensure that a CHCIO has the ability and skills needed to perform and that he/she is qualified to meet the current and future needs of their organization,” said Marzano.

The next CHCIO Examination is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the CHIME11 Fall CIO Forum. For more information about the CHCIO Program, including exam registration, visit:
