ACS, A Xerox Company, to acquire The Breakaway Group

Nov. 30, 2011

DALLAS – ACS, A Xerox Company, (NYSE: XRX) today announced its acquisition of The Breakaway Group, adding a new cloud-based service to help healthcare professionals accelerate their adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

Similar to the way pilots use flight simulation for training and safety, the Denver-based firm’s technology, PromisePoint, allows caregivers to practice using an EMR just as they would in the hospital or doctor’s office. By simulating their environment, they get familiar with using the system to enter orders and document patient care, without jeopardizing real patient data.

With this acquisition, ACS adds to its list of services that help healthcare providers get the most out of meaningful use funding and prepare for upcoming changes for ICD-10 compliance.  In addition to selecting, deploying, integrating, and supporting EMR technology, ACS can now educate and ensure that healthcare professionals use the EMR system for clinical benefit. Providers that use PromisePoint boost EMR adoption rates up to 70 percent faster than the industry standard.

“Our mission to make it easier for healthcare professionals to adopt new software and workflows is powered by the very real issues of improving safety and decreasing costs in healthcare.  ACS is a strong supporter of this and their global resources allow us to reach well beyond our original vision and make a bigger difference,” said Charles Fred, CEO, The Breakaway Group.

PromisePoint can be customized to imitate the desktop, laptop or tablet set-up for the specific hospital or doctor’s office, including the way the information is presented by different EMR vendors like Allscripts, Cerner, Epic or McKesson. The Breakaway Group delivers the solution as a service to accommodate regulation and technology changes, as well as staffing changes or the addition of new departments.

“Many healthcare providers have made the leap to new technology, but they aren’t yet reaping the benefits that come from capturing patient data in the most accurate and meaningful way,” said Chad Harris, group president of Healthcare Provider Solutions for ACS.  “The Breakaway Group didn’t just design a training program to help – they have a think tank doing research to stay up to date with new rules, upgrades and new challenges, like ICD-10 compliance.”

Breakaway’s management team and employees will remain with the company, with Fred serving as managing director. The Breakaway Group will continue to facilitate its advisory board to drive research and solve problems with the support of the top 100 healthcare leaders in the U.S.
