Dear Mr. Guerra,

We are pleased to note your May issue cover story entitled “Back to School” by Mark Hagland (http://www.healthcare-informatics_back_to_school), and would like to be sure that your readers are aware of additional paths to biomedical and health informatics training and education.

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is the professional home for biomedical and health informatics and is dedicated to the development and application of informatics in support of patient care, public health, teaching, research, administration, and related policy.

Since 2006, AMIA has offered our distance learning 10x10 informatics training program (http://www.amia.org/10x10), which is conducted in a wide range of settings in collaboration with strategic partners in the informatics education community. For those who want to obtain degrees in biomedical and health informatics, there are several colleges and universities offering programs (http://www.amia.org/informatics/acad%2526training/index.asp).

Demand is growing for individuals with training and skills in biomedical and health informatics who can work in clinical or public health organizations, as faculty in academia, as researchers or analysts in commercial or public institutions or as health care providers or managers. In short, informatics is a terrific career.

If any of your readers would like additional information, we can be reached at (301) 657-1291 or http://www.amia.org.

Sincerely, Don E. Detmer, M.D., MAPresident and CEO, AMIA
