Healthcare Takes Two of Three Top Prizes
North Mississippi Medical Center (Tupelo, Miss.) and the Premier Health Alliance (San Diego) have won two of the three 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards for performance excellence.
Baldrige criteria is recognized as a standard for performance excellence and award winners must demonstrate increased market share, improved customer satisfaction, greater employee relations and enhanced operational performance.
The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the nation's highest Presidential honor awarded to organizations for quality and organizational performance excellence. Managed by the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Baldrige National Quality Program was established by Congress in 1987.
QuadraMed Taps HIMSS Analytics
As part of a four-year agreement, Chicago-based HIMSS Analytics will open up its Web-enabled HIMSS Analytics Database (derived from the Dorenfest IHDS+ Database) to Reston, Va.-based QuadraMed Corporation
QuadraMed stated that the database will provide it with “insight and market information.”
The database helps track technology adoption in healthcare by collecting utilization and deployment data trend information on software applications, wireless local area networks, Web tool sets, RFID and security applications, according to HIMSS Analytics.
Davis Joins HSC
Matthew Davis, M.D., M.A.P.P., associate professor of pediatrics, internal medicine and public policy at the University of Michigan, has joined the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) as a part-time senior health researcher.
Davis will maintain his appointment at the University of Michigan while working on a range of research projects at HSC, including consumer-driven health plans, obesity and children's health issues. Since his research fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar, Davis’ research has focused on the financing and delivery of health services within the context of insurance coverage and public policy.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Davis completed a combined residency in pediatrics and internal medicine in Boston at Brigham & Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.
CPOE Barely Scratches Surface
More than nine in 10 hospitals have not implemented computer-based provider order entry (CPOE), according to the Washington-based Leapfrog Group, which recently named 59 hospitals to its first Top Hospital List.
Of 1,263 responding hospitals, only 7 percent have fully implemented CPOE (another 7 percent plan to implement it by 2007), representing little progress since Leapfrog began tracking implementation in 2002, when the figure was 3 percent, the organization stated.
On the positive side, the survey found: nine in 10 hospitals have implemented procedures to avoid wrong-site surgeries, and eight in 10 hospitals require a pharmacist to review all medication orders before medication is given to patients.
SureScripts Launches New Certification
Alexandria, Va.-based SureScripts is launching a new certification program designed to recognize physician software and service providers that are advancing electronic prescribing and healthcare interoperability.
SureScripts GoldRx certification status will be granted to electronic medical record and e-prescribing solutions that not only have been tested and marketed as e-prescribing capable, but have a track record of pharmacy interoperability, according to the organization.
GoldRx status mandates that physician software and service providers meet a number of benchmarks for live customer deployments, both with new physician users and within a technology provider's existing installed base. SureScripts will grant its first GoldRx certifications on Feb. 27.
