Our annual ranking of the top 100 healthcare IT companies by revenue helps CIOs know exactly who they're dealing with.

Relationships between hospitals and healthcare IT companies can be so intricate and complex, many liken them to marriages. With such a close bond, it's no wonder CIOs want as much information on these potential mates as possible. HCI's annual ranking of the top 100 companies by revenue serves as one more arrow in their quiver when hunting for vendor/partners. While some might argue that revenues don't translate directly into quality, they do indicate providers are spending money on a particular company's products and services. To make such spending trends clear, we have provided revenues on each company for the past three years.

Our 100 ranking also includes M&A activity, a method of growth which buyers interpret in different ways. While some view acquisitions as a positive way to go about increasing market share, others become concerned that a voracious appetite might not be followed up with proper integration (or assimilation). In any case, our rankings provide a concise snapshot for potential buyers to get an overview of a company's prowess and positioning.

To make the survey even more valuable, this year we enlisted the help of Vince Ciotti and Bob Alcaro, consultants with H.I.S. Professionals, LLC (HIS Pros). Ciotti and Alcaro provided estimated revenues for three large players (Siemens, GE and Sunquest) whose absence would have left noticeable holes in our offering. Ciotti and Alcaro also helped us ensure that only HIT revenues, not overall sales, were considered when ranking the companies. — A.G.
