Phil Fasano, who has been executive vice president and chief information officer at Kaiser Permanente since 2007, is leaving that position to take a newly created CIO position at insurer American International Group Inc.

At Kaiser he directed the approximately 6,000 employees of the health IT team and was named one of Computerworld’s Top 100 Information Technology (IT) Leaders in 2010. Kaiser currently serve approximately 9.5 million members in eight states and the District of Columbia.

Kaiser will conduct a national search to fill the CIO position. Richard (Dick) Daniels will assume the role of interim chief information officer (CIO) for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan Inc., effective immediately, according to a Kaiser statement. Daniels has more than 30 years of experience in information technology. He is currently senior vice president of enterprise shared services for Kaiser Permanente, which includes oversight of end user services, national facilities services, and national pharmacy operations. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president of Kaiser Permanente's information technology for health plan and hospital operations. He has also served in global IT leadership roles at JPMorgan Chase and Capital One.

Under Fasano’s leadership, the organization focused on improving its HealthConnect electronic health record, which helps coordinate care for 8.7 million members. Kaiser also made great strides on its My Health Manager patient portal, which allows members to make and reschedule appointments, check lab results, and send e-mails to care providers.

At AIG, Fasano will be responsible for oversight of the company’s global information technology, including reviewing and updating technology systems and platforms, along with data management and security. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, he served in information-technology leadership roles in some of the nation’s top finance companies, including Capital One Financial Group, JP Morgan, and Deutsche Financial Services, a division of Deutsche Bank.
