The week of September 21st is National Health IT Week. There will be many events in our nation’s capital to educate representatives on the benefits of the effective use of IT in the healthcare setting. For the first time, these representatives are really listening. The Obama Administration’s focus on healthcare IT and willingness to devote significant funds to support the spread of IT in healthcare have gotten the attention of our elected representatives.

It has also exposed some deep knowledge deficits which can only be closed through education. Who better to educate a legislator or legislative staff than a trusted constituent? This is your opportunity to get involved in the process and help shape the future of our industry. In the process you may just build some useful relationships with the people you put in office!

On Wednesday, September 23rd 2009, HIMSS will be sponsoring HIT Advocacy Day on the Hill, where people who have registered will be set up with meetings at the offices of their respective legislators. This is a unique opportunity to meet your elected officials and to help them understand a critical issue that needs their ongoing support.

It’s never to late to get involved, and it’s a great civics lesson that you can pass on to your kids!
