The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO), also known as SNOMED SDO, has acquired the intellectual property

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO), also known as SNOMED SDO, has acquired the intellectual property rights of SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) and its antecedents from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for $7.8 million.

SNOMED SDO will assume responsibility for the ongoing maintenance, development and distribution of SNOMED CT. When implemented in software applications, the organization claims SNOMED CT can be used to represent clinically relevant information, thus contributing to the development of standardized electronic health records.

The CAP will continue to support SDO operations under an initial three-year contract, and will continue to provide SNOMED-related products and services as a licensee of the terminology, according to Northfield, Ill.-based SNOMED SDO.
