The Washington-based Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has declared a successful demonstration of initial Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) capabilities, marking a milestone in the development of a secure foundation for health information exchange.

The demonstration, conducted by a group of communities, healthcare providers, and Federal agencies working together in the NHIN project, was presented to the American Health Information Community at its meeting in Washington. The live demonstrations signal progress toward wider use of interoperable EHRs, according to the organization.

The announcement marks the culmination of a year-long collaboration by participants in the NHIN Cooperative that established consensus on issues such as privacy and security, consumer preferences, and accessing patient information at the point of care among those sharing information, it touts.
