Hartford Hospital (Hartford, Conn.) is adding a pharmacist to its emergency department team in an effort to increase safety and efficiency and help decrease medication errors, it says.

Gabrielle Jacknin, Pharm. D., has been appointed to the position, which will entail reviewing high-risk medication orders, responding to traumas and resuscitations, consulting with doctors and providing patient education regarding prescriptions, according to Hartford. With the appointment, the hospital hopes to realize cost savings by suggesting more affordable versions of medications and recommending more cost-effective ways of delivering medication when appropriate.

Hartford Hospital is an 867 bed regional referral center that includes a mental health and a facility and a long-term care facility. It is a teaching hospital and tertiary care center employing more than 6,600 full-time or part-time employees and a medical staff of more than 970 physicians.
