The Wisconsin Health Information Exchange (WHIE, Mequon, Wis.) is collaborating with Louisville, Ky.-based Humana Inc. to ensure that clinicians have access to community-wide data for emergency department patients.

The two organizations entered a pilot program in which Humana will offer incentives to providers that utilize the WHIE.

Pilots are also underway in which Humana seeks to reduce ED visits by providing information to members on self-management strategies and urgent care as possible alternatives. Members with three or more ED visits within a one-year period can also receive a referral to a Humana nurse to help address questions on chronic conditions and potentially a referral into a clinical program, says the company.

WHIE is a not-for-profit organization formed to improve the quality, safety efficiency and accessibility of healthcare and public health by enabling collaboration and information sharing across multiple health care facilities. The WHIE ED Linking Project is being pursued in collaboration with the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership, WI Department of Health Services, and participating health care providers across the greater Milwaukee area.
