Many community pharmacies have put in place a disaster relief initiative that aims to provide licensed prescribers and pharmacists with secure access to a patient's prescription history from anywhere in the country.
In the event of an emergency, Brooks Eckerd, CVS/pharmacy, Giant Food Pharmacy, Kerr Drug, Longs Drugs, Rite Aid, Stop & Shop, Walgreens and Wal-Mart will provide access to the program, "Rx History," through the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by SureScripts, Alexandria, Va.
Rx History can be accessed by licensed prescribers in two ways:
- EMR and E-Prescribing Software — This is the primary option for securely accessing prescription information.
- Portal — For those prescribers without access to EMRs, the pharmacies have teamed with Informed Decisions and the American Medical Association to facilitate access to Rx History in the event of a disaster through the In Case of Emergency Prescription Database.
