United Kingdom-based GE Healthcare and Netherlands-based MERS International (Medical Event Reporting System) are uniting to develop a tool aimed at improving patient safety.

The solution will combine GE’s process improvement and change management methods with MERS International’s software, which is designed to help hospital staffs systematically record, investigate, classify and determine the root causes of events such as falls, medication errors, and ventilator-associated pneumonias.

The system, known as MERS, will be deployed by GE Healthcare specialists trained to use the data as part of Lean, Six Sigma and other methodologies to drive process and cultural changes that may help to prevent adverse events, say the companies.
