According to a report from the Burlington, V.T.-based CapSite, a healthcare technology research and advisory firm, 71 percent of U.S. Hospitals are looking to buy new health information exchange (HIE) solutions. The report, the 2012 U.S. Health Information Exchange (HIE) Study, looked at insights from 370 hospitals on HIE market adoption, share, and opportunity.

“Our study shows that half the hospitals in the U.S. have now joined a private, state or regional HIE. This is an increase from our 2011 HIE Study, where we found a third of hospitals had joined an HIE,” CapSite senior vice president and GM, Gino Johnson, said in a statement. “Additionally, we expect the market adoption of HIE technologies to continue to accelerate over the next two years as provider organizations move towards Stage 2 of meaningful use.”

The study looked at vendors such as Allscripts, Carefx, Cerner, Epic, GE Healthcare, InterSystems, McKesson, Meditech, Medicity, Orion Health, and a number of others. It is the most recent in a series of CapSite industry reports focused on assessing the impact of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009.
