The clinical analytics market for population health management is still evolving and in its infancy, according to a recent research report from the Cambridge, Mass.-based Chilmark Research.

The research, 2014 Analytics for Population Health Management Market Trends Report, concludes that healthcare organizations are struggling to adapt to the changing models of reimbursement, while vendors haven't built out software to meet market needs. While many vendors--as close to 100--are promising analytics for population health management, the researchers say that few are "delivering on their brochure-ware promises."

Electronic health record (EHR) vendors are making entry in this market, the research states. However, they are behind "best of breed" vendors in terms of product innovation and capabilities. Many may end up acquiring the "best of breed" vendors, the researchers predict.

"Vendors can be roughly divided into two categories: best-of-breed and platform-play vendors depending on their particular products and marketing strategies. It is currently a best-of-breed market, with providers adapting vendor solutions to meet a particular need created by a specific payment contract. Vendors aspiring to be become enterprise-wide platforms find 'enterprise-thinking' HCOs in short supply, the author of the report, analyst Cora Sharma, said in a statement.
