The Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT (ONC) has named Rebecca Freeman, R.N., as the agency’s new chief nursing officer (CNO).

Freeman will be a part of the Office of Clinical Quality and Safety where she will lead coordination on ONC’s outreach and programs impacting the nursing community, as well as co-lead ONC’s Clinical Informatics Grand Rounds, according to an ONC brief. Last October, ONC announced that then-chief nursing officer, Judy Murphy, R.N., would be stepping down from her post. Murphy, who now is CNO at IBM Healthcare Global Business Services, was at ONC since 2011.

Most recently, Freeman was assistant vice president at Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), where she led the strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation and coordination required to fully implement the Epic electronic health record (EHR). Before joining HCA, Rebecca was chief nursing information officer and manager of the Nursing Informatics program at the Medical University of South Carolina.  She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina, and completed her Critical Care Nurse Residency in Emergency Medicine at Lexington Medical Hospital. She also holds a Ph.D. in nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina, according to ONC.
