The Office of Interoperability and Standards at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has been discussing how the National Information Exchange Model or NIEM can help standardize health information exchange. NIEM has been successful in national security and law enforcement information exchanges, and is being looked at to link up state and federal health information exchanges. Vangent’s Health Interoperability Architect Erik Pupo took time to talk to Healthcare Informatics Associate Editor Jennifer Prestigiacomo about the opportunities and challenges of using NIEM. Erik currently serves as the chief architect to the ONC for the Federal Health Architecture program, as well as Strategic Advisor to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).
