The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is going green with a new initiative that will see the use of wind energy to power the health system’s data centers, the organization recently announced.

UPMC will move forward with this initiative after having purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) Pennsylvania wind power from EverPower Wind Holdings Inc. of Pittsburgh, which is equal to its data centers’ annual energy usage, the organization said. In total, it will be 15,400,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity. t will become the first in Pennsylvania to commit to 100 percent wind power energy for its data centers.

“As a good steward of the environment and public health, we are pleased to be able to make this commitment to local wind energy for our employees and our patients,” UPMC CIO Dan Drawbaugh said in a statement. The organization’s wind power initiative continues its work in this area, as it has also looked to lower power consumption at the sites using advanced cooling methods and consolidation of computer systems.
