Association Announces EHR Developer Code of Conduct
The Electronic Health Record Association (EHR Association), a non-profit association of more than 40 EHR companies, has created an electronic health record (EHR) Developer Code of Conduct, which aims to encourage transparency and collaboration among EHR developers, as well as developers, providers, and industry stakeholders.
The code was developed throughout the year, with input from various stakeholder groups such as providers, various vendors, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) association, the American College of Physicians (ACP), government agencies, and others. It focuses on:
- General business practices
- Patient safety
- Interoperability and data portability
- Clinical and billing documentation
- Privacy and security
- Patient engagement
“ACP is pleased with the effort by the EHR Association to address some important issues related to electronic health records and patient safety, interoperability, documentation, privacy and security, and patient engagement. The EHR Developer Code of Conduct establishes firm principles that are very responsive to the issues physicians and other health care professionals would like addressed as they try to select, implement, and optimize EHR solutions in practice. We look forward to collaborating with the EHR Association as these principles are implemented,” Michael Barr, Senior Vice President at the American College of Physicians (ACP), said in a statement.
The EHR Association is looking to get EHR developers to adopt the Code, even if they aren’t members of the association.
