HIMSS, the mHealth Summit, and the Continua Alliance are connecting their names to a new group, the Personal Connected Health Alliance, focused on representing the consumer voice in personal connected health.

The alliance launched this week and says it will aim to generate awareness, availability and access to plug-and-play, consumer-friendly personal health technologies. Its will operate under the non-profit umbrella for the Continua Health Alliance and mHealth Summit, and an independent HIMSS organization.

Continua, a 200-member nonprofit organization, is working to establish interoperability within the personal connected health space. The Personal Connected Health Alliance appears to be an extension of this mission, focusing specifically on empowering patients themselves. Specifically, the alliance is looking at how consumer health device manufacturers can develop "user-friendly connectivity (interoperability) standards" that would allow individuals to track trends in their blood glucose levels and vital signs.

“The Personal Connected Health Alliance aims to facilitate the development and widespread availability of user-friendly personal health devices, mobile apps, sensors and other connected health technologies, putting consumers in the driver’s seat when it comes to their own health," states Jeremy Bonfini, executive vice president of the PCHA and executive vice president of Global Services at HIMSS.
